Lecturer: Tatiana Tomie Onuma, a doctoral candidate in Political Science at Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain

Title: AGE(ING) IN BRAZIL: AN INTERSECTIONAL APPROACH TO OLDER PEOPLE’S RIGHTS AND POLICIES

Description: Tatiana’s research critically examines ageing in Brazil (2019–2026), focusing on how rights and policies are shaped within a polarised political context. Despite Brazil’s comprehensive legal framework for older people’s rights, alongside a broad set of ageing policies and institutional actors, major gaps remain between what is formally recognised and what is effectively implemented.

The central question asks how “old age” is constructed and how rights are realised in Brazil through legislation, political discourse, and the design and implementation of public policy between polarised governments.

The current theoretical lens integrates critical theory of human rights, ageing studies, and policy analysis through a Human Rights-Based Approach.
